Slot Canyons - 2000
In May of 2000, Bruce led a tour with the Friends of Arizona Highways. This group toured the Slot Canyons of northern
Arizona and southern Utah. Our photographer host and guide was LeRoy Dejolie. Being Navajo, and a local resident, LeRoy was able to give us a lot of details. He even took us to one of his most revered places: Waterholes Canyon at sunset.
Most of these images are those taken with the digital camera and slightly cropped (in some cases), but not edited or color
adjusted. No filters were used. The lens image is roughly equivalent to a 35 mm lens on a 35 mm camera.
The most photographed of the canyons, Antelope, is split into two accessible sections, both are on the Navajo reservation and require permission to enter:
-
Upper Antelope Canyon lies on the south side of AZ-98 east of Page, AZ. It is the most hiker-friendly with wide sand bottoms and large rooms. Being away from the road, you need to hire a guide service to take you there - there are many in Page who are licensed to do so.
-
Lower Antelope Canyon lies on the north side of AZ-98 east of Page, AZ. It is more difficult, with narrow passages, and uneven bottom terrain. However, it is the most accessible, as you can turn into the parking lot from AZ-98 and pay your fee and walk in from there!
Antelope Canyon is about the only place in Arizona for good photography at NOON! Accomodations are readily available in Page, AZ.
