Heian Maru Wreck

Friday morning's dives began with two on the Heian Maru.

Prior to the war, she was a luxury liner. She is a ship of immense proportions (over 500 feet long, about 60 feet wide 11,620 tons). During the war, she worked as a submarine tender. Now she lies on her port side in about 100 feet of water.

Excitement on this dive includes many periscopes waiting for installation, a hold full of torpedoes and waiting torpedo heads. The innards are relatively accessible and a guide will show the neophyte wreck diver the engine room.

Here is a photo of the periscopes which are located in the starboard companionway opposite where the large rectangular windows are on the level above the deck.

Picturesque are the torpedo warheads are located near the bridge.

The pottery in and around the Heian Maru tell the story of her years as a luxury liner, before the hard war years.

An arrangement of artifacts from the better days makes an interesting display on the starboard side of this once majestic liner.

Linda found her beloved pipe fish on this wreck in 2002 - photos will be here soon!
