Unkai Maru #6 Wreck

On Tuesday morning, during breakfast, we moved again to enjoy an early morning dive on the Unkai Maru #6 , a 3,320 ton freighter. This was our first dive on a Truk wreck which is sitting upright! The propeller is at 135 feet, the top of the bridge is about 60 feet, and the king post, as shown in the photo, comes within a few feet of the surface.

The Unkai Maru #6 (a name meaning Lucky) was one of the unuckiest ships. She almost made it through the war. She was in civilian service, but called up; in January 1944. She was refitted in Japan and made it to Truk by the end of January. She was sunk February 17.

Linda is photographing the profusion of sponges and corals which adorn the king post on the Unkai Maru #6 . What a great way to do your safety stop!
