While the divers were chowing down on lunch, our floating hotel was moved the short distance to the Yamagiri
Maru, a freighter of 6,438 tons, where we would spend the rest of the day. The first wreck located in Truk, she was found in the late 60s when a fishery employee noticed the
color variation with the surrounding terrain and dove down to explore.
She sits on her port side in 110 feet of water. Interesting things here include a hold full of artillery shells and a swim through from hold 3 out the hole left by a torpedo. The
ship is teeming with small fish and colorful corals.
We made a "twilight" dive, entering just before sunset and watching the "changing of the guard" from the day creatures to those that own the night. This photo,
from the twilight dive, shows the color of leathery corals, hard corals, two clams, and a red sponge clinging to the same bit of wreck.
Nutrient rich waters, indeed!
